Dj/Producer Jason Risk is a English born but Aussie at heart and he is here to do nothing but cause mayhem in your speakers!, since he owned a walkman and thanks to his dad he filled it up with 80’s and 90’s dance tunes.
His desire to become a DJ began while hanging out with work mates, who were already great DJ’s, he started doing mixes for mates & house parties but the hobby soon became more than just a bit of fun, his desire to have his own tracks in the mixes pushed him to start producing music as he was in need to express his creativity in a new way.
In 2011 like a lot of new producers he landed a couple of first releases on small time labels, he knew that this was only the beginning! as his passion for music grew stronger, and since then a once occasional hobby turned in to the focus of his life, driven by the absolute love for music and endless possibilities.
SUM: Hi Jason, thanks for giving us a moment to chat with you, tell us how this year is going so far for you ?
I’m very happy with how this year has begun. Being in Alice Springs the last few years it gave me a lot of time to focus on my production, and just recently I’ve made the move to Sydney which has opened a few doors for gigs and opportunities!
SUM: Your new EP in collaboration with DJ Forte “Billy IS Coming Home” just came out a few days ago on Big Alliance Records , tell us what was the creative process ? and how this collaboration happened ?
Forte & I love getting together in the studio, but because we both had day jobs with different hours at times, we’d work on ideas in our own studios, meet up and put them together. I had an idea for a bounce tune, and Forte had an idea for a big room style track so we got the start for both tracks and then finished them together. He’s has been influenced by Jazz sort of stuff, so Billy Brass was more of a fun tune (especially with Forte on the mic haha!) but turned out pretty good!
SUM: Tell us what inspires you ?
The fans – The feedback is so inspiring to keep on going. Just knowing that your music can affect people all over the world is amazing, because its something I love doing so much.
SUM: Is there a plug in , that you can say , I can’t live without it ?
Has to be TAL. Its a free suite with a reverb plugin that I just have to send my drums to. . It really gives them this special sort of feel and I use it in every track now.
SUM: How do you feel the music scene in Australia relates to the electronic dance community in the U.S.?
I think there is so much talent coming out of Aus now than ever before, Particular with the Melbourne sound. Its great to see guys like Will Sparks, Uberjakd & Joel Fletcher headlining in the US, you guys seem to dig it hard over there and hopefully one day I can be rockin there too.
SUM: You feel you get the most of the support from your country or from abroad ?
I’m surprised how much support I’ve been getting from abroad, but Aussies seem to stand out a bit, just because there seems to be a big community over here where everyone supports each other tunes in the clubs, and is willing to help each other out.
SUM: When was the last time you went to an EDM concert or event as a fan? Not as a Dj?
Embarressing haha I last saw Hardwell & Avicii in London in 2012. Last year was all about saving for the big move to Sydney so I didn’t get out much, but I think its paying off now.
SUM: What do you do in a normal day ?
Well I’ve just recently quit my day job to persue music full time, so it’s a bit different now but goes a little something like: Wake up, Eat, Jump on the studio computer for 6 hours, browse through soundcloud, facebook etc, Eat, play whereever I’m booked at, then sometimes sleep haha.
SUM: What was your favorite candy when you was a kid ?
To this day I still love Mars bars! Have ever since I can remember.
SUM: What are you top 3 favorite tracks at a the moment ?
Slop Rock – No Other Way (Reece Low Remix) – in love!!
TJR, VINAI – Bounce Generation – major inspiration
WhoKilledMickey – Sonata (free from his sound cloud!)
SUM: What is the piece of advise that you have received that you feel has help you the most in your career ?
Your most favourite production should ALWAYS be your last, if it’s not, dont put it out, make it better! Because if you’re not aiming to be better your not going to make it in this industry.
SUM: What is the weirdest thing that has happen to you in a gig ?
Got asked to play Mambo #5 during an Electro house set.
SUM: If you get to choose a stage to perform what would it be and why ?
Stereosonics because to be headlining in front of your home crowd is a huge honor!
SUM: What is your all-time favorite movie , why ?
Die Hard with a Vengeance, because John McClain is freaking awesome!! IIve watched it like 15 times haha!
SUM: Any words for your fans ?
Love you long time :P Seriously though you are amazing and I couldn’t be where I am today without the support from you all, so be on the watch for some free stuff very soon :)
